Hi. Welcome to my photography website. I'm sure you've already guessed that my name is Petra. I grew up in South Dakota, spent most of my adult life in Texas, and returned to South Dakota in 2020. Moving across the country at the beginning of a pandemic was a scary, crazy and challenging experience, and is something I wouldn't recommend. But that's a story for another time. |
I've been passionate about photography for as long as I can remember, getting my first Kodak Instamatic camera at a very young age. Does anyone else remember those four-sided flash cubes? The included picture shows just some of the cameras I've used over the years, a few of which were recently rediscovered in boxes stored at my parents' home.
As an enthusiastic hobbyist, I photographed family, vacations, and holiday festivities. I could be heard pleading, "Can you please, please, please pull over so I can get a picture of that?" or "Wait, I need to take a picture before we open presents." Yes, I was THAT person! At the time, I was also a person just using her camera to document events and locations. |
That all changed in 2015, when I bought my first DSLR and just started shooting . . . shooting lots and lots and lots of pictures. I saw colors, textures and light in a whole new way and began using a camera as my creative outlet. I stopped to observe the small things in nature that previously went unnoticed as I hurried through life. I marveled at the brilliant colors of a sunset and looked to the sky to gaze at the magnificent glow of the Milky Way.
Eager to take my passion to the next level, I read books and internet articles on photography, watched videos, and absorbed as much as I could from more experienced photographers. Above all, I rarely went anywhere without my camera, constantly practicing and experimenting with ways to capture what I was really seeing for the first time. |
Currently I'm focusing on nature and landscape photography, using my camera to connect with the natural world and to share the unique beauty I see in everyday life . . . from the delicate wings of a fluttering butterfly to a field of wild grass soaking up the day's last rays of golden light.
I invite you to check out the rest of my website and hope you enjoy the images as much as I enjoy capturing them. To stay up to date on my latest photographic adventures, be sure to check out the "Recent Work" section of my gallery and follow me on Facebook and Instagram.
